At this point in 1985 I had a 2 hour program on 91.5 FM, KKUP in Cupertino. The station at this time was only mono. I think we went stereo around 1990. My show was on 3-5 PM on every other Sunday afternoon.

By this time KKUP was already in its second location in a light industrial area just north of San Jose. Evidently it had been a painters workshop previously.

My first tape trade was with Tom Furgas of Youngstown, Ohio. He used keyboards, 8 track tape cartridge loops and a whole slew of other sounds to create a very unusual and ecelctic release. Looks like he made it in 1984 so it was fairly new when I got it originally.

Electronic madness from two of the scene's most notable artists, Dave Prescott and Hal McGee. Each had their own labels but was released on Chris Phinney's Harsh Reality label.

This program was originally broadcast in December, 1985.

As with most of the No Pigeonholes programs the very first broadcast had a lot of variety. Here are the artists that were featured and some small notes about what I remember:

Kit and Coco: this keyboard oriented release was actually on LP and a high quality product. I suppose he recorded it in his home studio but who knows. I see he is still active today at: http://www.kitwatkins.com/indexmain.htm

Zirbel: I remember liking this tape but even then I did not know much about the artist.

Peter Catham: This southern California musician had a very creative approach not only in his music but his presentation of the tapes. He even had a release where you would build a paper device to place over your ears. He appears to still be at it: http://www.myspace.com/petercathamhisappleloops

YU: This was a trio from Texas headed up by a guy named Dwain Woodruff. They had a full , rich synth sound and accented vocal delivery. No information about his current whereabouts however.

Jimmy Townes: This was a favorite tape and featured some really hip poetry type lyrics with a killer backing band and ripping guitar leads. This is still hot stuff. Wow, the internet is great! He appears to also still be at it!:http://www.masterdigital.com/examples/data/rab014.htm

Copernicus: A powerful poet with another hot band, this guy is evidently also making a comeback. The stuff on this show was on LP and was pretty strong material. I thought I saw a recent ad for a new album in a music magazine. Here's some wiki on him:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copernicus

Bored Young Men ( incorrectly announced as Ken Clinger): This was Ken Clinger and his pal Beeg Srahka from one of their hilarious and quirky tapes. Very eerie but humorous at the same time. Ken Clinger is still going strong:http://www.myspace.com/kenclinger

Tom Furgas: my first trading pal has a unique style in his keyboard work and also his experimental side. Tom does not have a current web site but is still very active..

PaperBag: Was an all improv band featuring the Segal Bros ( Mark and Greg) plus a bass and keyboard player. This was from an LP I believe which may have been released on SST. Greg especially has gone on to many outstanding recordings.http://www.spiritone.com/~gsmulti/

Phillip Perkins: noted collagist from the Bay Area I believe produced a couple of LPs that featured very interesting field recordings and very aural trips.Still going strong:ttp://web.mac.com/seeadog/Site2/Philip_Perkins.html

Ted Lee: I don't remember much about this artist. I believe this was some naieve sounding geek rock.

Bouncing from Transient Sonic Stimulants compiled by Zan Hoffman: This was yet another collaborative release from the world's most prolific artist. Zan by nature is an experimental artist although he does have a song project called bodycoktail. I know it sounds cliche but they broke the mold when they made Zan:http://www.myspace.com/bodycocktail
