Alphabetical Odor was the first tape I recorded on my own 4 track, an open reel TEAC 3440. Although I had been recording for many years this was the first time I had my own machine to do overdubbing with. A few years earlier I had borrowed Greg Gray's Dokorder open reel to do some songs on but having a permanent 4 track of my own opened new, wondrous doors for me.

Slightly before 1970 a group I had with my friends Geoff Alexander, Joe Morrow, Jim Kulczynski, Dave Leskovsky and my own brothers Chris and Gary had done much recording as The Roots Madness. We produced many tape ablums and even one record album that came out in 1971. None of that was overdubbed material though but all live music directly to a two track open reel recorder.
